Tentacle Dildos: How to Choose One (Taper, Suckers and Size)

Close-up of raised suckers on a silicone tentacle dildo

Short answer: a good tentacle dildo is made of platinum silicone, tapers gradually from a narrow tip, and has a suction base. To choose one, check the maximum diameter first, then the texture (suckers, ridges), and treat the length as reach you can use if you want, not a goal. Beginners do well with a maximum diameter under 5 cm (2 in).

Tentacle toys are one of the fastest-growing fantasy shapes, and also one of the most misunderstood. A 40 cm tentacle is not meant to be taken in full. Here is how to read one before you buy.

What makes a tentacle dildo different?

Three things set tentacles apart from other fantasy shapes:

  • The taper. A tentacle starts thin and widens slowly toward the base. That makes the first few centimetres very easy and lets you decide how far to go.
  • The suckers. Rows of raised cups along one face, often with ridges or scale plates on the back. Each one is a small pressure point in and out.
  • The flex. Long tentacles bend and curl. In silicone, that flex is what makes long formats comfortable instead of rigid poles.

The look itself goes back a long way: Hokusai's woodblock print The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife dates from 1814, and tentacle imagery has stayed in Japanese art, anime and fantasy fandoms since.

How to choose a tentacle dildo

1. Maximum diameter

Because tentacles taper, the widest point is near the base. Look at that number. Under 5 cm is beginner-friendly, 5 to 6 cm is intermediate, above 6 cm is for people who already use large toys.

2. Texture

Raised suckers feel more intense than you expect, especially on the way out. Defined, individually sculpted suckers are a sign of a good mould. Shallow, uniform bumps usually mean a cheap one. More texture means more lube.

3. Length

Long tentacles are about choice, flex and the look. Nobody is expected to use 40 cm. A long tentacle can also be used folded or curled, or by two partners at once.

4. Base

A suction base lets you use the tentacle hands-free on a smooth surface. For anal use, a wide base is a safety feature, not a style choice: it keeps the toy from going further than intended.

5. Material

Suckers and grooves trap lube and fluids. That is fine on non-porous platinum silicone, which you can wash thoroughly. On porous materials like TPE or PVC jelly, those same grooves are hard to get truly clean. More on that in platinum silicone vs TPE.

Our tentacle dildos compared

Tentacle Insertable Max diameter Weight Level
Eric 16.8 cm 5.6 cm 449 g Intermediate
Lord Octopus (size M) 30 cm 4.7 cm 335 g Intermediate
Joseph 42.5 cm 4.8 cm 776 g Expert
Zenos 19.5 cm 6.2 cm 524 g Expert
Cyril 19.7 cm total 6.6 cm 555 g Expert
Modeus 21 cm 7.2 cm 445 g Expert

A useful detail: the longest tentacles here are not the widest. Lord Octopus M reaches 30 cm at only 4.7 cm wide, and Joseph 42.5 cm at 4.8 cm. Modeus is the opposite, shorter at 21 cm but 7.2 cm at its widest.

Which tentacle should you pick?

First tentacle, compact: Eric. 16.8 cm with raised suckers along the whole shaft and a flat suction base. Short enough to stay easy to handle.

First tentacle, slim and long: Lord Octopus in size M. Only 4.7 cm wide with a precise tip, and it comes in four sizes (insertable 30, 39, 48.5 and 58.5 cm), so you can go up later in the same shape.

You want girth: Zenos at 6.2 cm, or Modeus at 7.2 cm if you are already experienced.

How to use a tentacle dildo

  1. Warm up and use a generous amount of water-based lube on the toy, especially between the suckers.
  2. Start with just the tip. The taper does the work; go a little deeper each time.
  3. Slow strokes let you feel each sucker. Fast strokes blur them together.
  4. Try it on the suction base on a smooth wall or floor, so your hands are free and you control the depth with your body.
  5. Stop if you feel sharp pain. Stretch can be intense; pain is a signal.

How to clean a tentacle dildo

This is where tentacles need more care than smooth toys. Wash with warm water and a mild unscented soap, then go over the suckers and grooves with a soft toothbrush. Rinse well, because leftover soap gets trapped in the cups too. Let it air-dry fully, sucker side up, before storing it in a pouch away from sunlight and dust. Our full method is in the silicone toy cleaning guide.

FAQ

Are tentacle dildos good for beginners?

Often, yes. The gradual taper makes the start easy. Pick one with a maximum diameter under 5 cm and remember you do not have to use the full length.

Are tentacle dildos safe?

Choose platinum silicone, a flared or suction base for anal use, and water-based lube. Clean the suckers carefully after every use.

How long should a tentacle dildo be?

For most people, 15 to 20 cm of usable shaft is plenty. Longer tentacles are about flex, the look and variety, not depth.

Can you use a tentacle dildo for anal?

Yes, with a wide base, lots of lube and a slow start. The taper actually makes tentacles one of the easier shapes for anal play.

What lube works with a silicone tentacle?

Water-based lube. Silicone lube can bond with silicone toys over time unless you have spot-tested it on the base.
